What is an Adaptable worm gearbox?

An Adaptable is a foot-mounted worm gearbox whose input and output shafts can be set in six interchangeable positions on the same casing, so one gearbox covers installations that would otherwise need several different models. Anand Gears builds Adaptable units at centre distances from 30 mm to 100 mm with ratios from 5:1 to 70:1.

What Adaptable sizes are available?

Standard Adaptable centre distances are 30, 42, 50, 55, 60, 72, 84 and 100 mm, all with ratios from 5:1 to 70:1. Power and torque at a given duty point are confirmed at the budgetary-offer stage.

Can an Adaptable gearbox be supplied with a motor?

Yes. Motorised units are coupled and aligned in our works so they arrive ready to bolt down and wire. A hollow input with an IEC B5 flange face is also available so a standard flange motor bolts straight on without a coupling.

Is an Adaptable worm gearbox self-locking?

Worm gearing becomes self-locking at higher ratios, which is why Adaptable units are used on gate, damper and fence drives where the load must hold when the power is off. Whether a particular ratio self-locks depends on the lead angle, so confirm it with our engineers rather than assuming it. Self-locking should never be treated as a substitute for a safety brake on a lifting application.

The Adaptable is the gearbox for machine builders who do not yet know which way the drive will face. The same foot-mounted casing accepts six interchangeable shaft positions, so input and output can be set left, right, up, or down without a different model number. Centre distances run 30 mm to 100 mm with ratios from 5:1 to 70:1. Where a standard catalogue box would force a redesign of the machine frame, the Adaptable is turned to suit the frame instead.

Why the shaft positions matter

A machine frame is usually fixed before the drive is chosen. Because the Adaptable's input and output can be set in six positions on the same foot, one gearbox suits a left-hand or right-hand build, and a machine can be mirrored for a different site without a second drawing. It also cuts spares: a single Adaptable on the shelf covers several machines that face different ways.

Motorised

Supplied complete with an electric motor, coupled and aligned in our works so the unit arrives ready to bolt down and wire.

Flange Input for an IEC Motor

Hollow input with an IEC flange face so a standard B5 motor bolts straight on — no coupling, no alignment on site.

Plain keyed output shaft, or a hollow bore that slides onto the driven shaft with a torque arm taking the reaction.
