Crane & Hoist Duty Helical Gearboxes

Helical drives built to crane duty — main hoist, auxiliary hoist, long travel and cross travel, in fabricated steel housings with profile-ground gearing.

Anand Gears crane duty helical gearbox with fabricated steel housing

Crane Duty

Built for Shock, Reversing and Repeated Starts

Crane drives are not ordinary drives. They start under load, reverse constantly, and take shock every time the hook picks up. Anand Gears builds these helical gearboxes to crane duty: a fabricated steel housing rather than a thin casting, case-hardened and profile-ground alloy steel gearing, and roller bearings sized for shock and reversing loads. Output shafts are solid, geared, or hollow, in horizontal or vertical orientation — covering main hoist, auxiliary hoist, long travel, and cross travel on EOT cranes.

Engineering Data

Stages and Ratio Bands

Indicative ratio bands by number of stages. Centre distance, housing and bearing selection are set by the duty — shock class, mechanism class, and the brake motor being paired with the drive.

StagesRatio BandTypical Crane Duty
Single stageup to approx. 6:1High-speed travel drives
Two stageapprox. 6:1 – 25:1Cross travel and light hoists
Three stageapprox. 25:1 – 130:1Main and auxiliary hoists
Four stageapprox. 130:1 – 650:1Slow, high-torque hoisting

What we need to size a crane drive

Send the safe working load, the hoisting or travel speed, the duty and mechanism class (M3, M5, M7 and so on), the motor rating and whether it is a brake motor, and the mounting arrangement. Ratio alone is not enough on a crane — the duty class decides the bearing and gear selection as much as the torque does.

Configurations

Crane Drive Configurations

The arrangements Anand Gears builds for crane and hoist builders.

Main Hoist Drive

Three or four stage reduction sized for the safe working load and the hoisting speed, with the brake motor pairing confirmed before build.

Auxiliary Hoist Drive

Lighter second hoist on the same crane, usually a three stage unit matched to the auxiliary load.

Long Travel Drive

Bridge travel along the runway — often a pair of drives running in step, with the shaft ends matched to the wheel arrangement.

Cross Travel Drive

Trolley travel across the bridge; two stage reduction with the shock class taken into the bearing selection.

Shaft-Mounted Hoist Units

Hollow output slid straight onto the drum or wheel shaft with a torque arm — the compact answer where the machine room is tight.

Vertical Output Arrangements

Output axis turned vertical where the drive layout calls for it, with seals and oil level changed to suit.

Where It Runs

Where These Drives Work

Crane and lifting equipment applications Anand Gears supplies.

EOT Cranes

Electric overhead travelling cranes in fabrication shops, foundries and warehouses.

Goods and Material Hoists

Vertical lifting duty where holding and controlled lowering matter as much as the lift itself.

Gantry and Semi-Gantry Cranes

Travel and hoist drives for yard and outdoor gantries.

Steel Plant Handling

Ladle, scrap and billet handling, where shock loading is constant and the housing has to take it.

Port and Yard Equipment

Material handling in dusty, wet and outdoor conditions.

Crane Rebuilds and Retrofits

Replacing a worn or obsolete crane gearbox on an existing crane, built to the original mounting.

Replacing an imported unit

Rebuilding or replacing an existing crane gearbox

Crane gearboxes usually need replacing long after the maker has stopped supporting them. Send the nameplate, the mounting dimensions, and the duty class, and Anand Gears will build a drive to the same mounting and ratio — or repair the existing one. We cut the gears in our own works, so a worn pinion or wheel can be replaced without scrapping the housing.
